Thirty Years at the Bench: Arthur Sterling on the Craft

By the Lumatic Editorial Team · April 8, 2024

Arthur Sterling learned his trade in the traditional way: a five-year apprenticeship, followed by a decade working under another master before striking out alone. Today, from a converted barn on the edge of Cirencester, he produces furniture that draws on English and Continental traditions with equal fluency. His current commission — a breakfront bookcase in English walnut for a country house in Wiltshire — will take approximately nine months from first sketch to installation. 'There is no shortcut to quality,' Arthur says with characteristic bluntness. 'You either do it properly or you don't do it at all.'
