There is a radicalism lurking beneath Sienna Blake's quietly confident manner. She will not touch peat. She refuses commissions that require the removal of mature trees. She insists on a biodiversity audit before putting pencil to paper. 'A garden that harms its environment is not a garden,' she says. 'It's a liability.'
Since establishing her practice in Bristol in 2017, Sienna has completed more than a hundred projects, from a tiny backyard rewilding in Montpelier to a four-acre estate garden in the Mendips. Her design vocabulary — meadow grass, native hedgerow, rain garden, permeable paving — is consistent across all scales, adapted to each site's specific soils, aspect, and ecology.
The school kitchen-garden programme, now in its third year, has introduced over 400 children to growing food. 'If you want to change how people relate to the natural world, you have to start young,' Sienna observes.
